Whether moving for a new job, a better life, retirement or simply a change of scenery, Americans are doing a lot of moving around. Where are they all going? That’s a question that can be answered each year by United Van Lines’ Migration Study. Eastern and Midwestern states dominate the list of those states where more people moved away than moved in. These are the states where more people moved away:
The survey found that about half of every move was job-related; the person or family moving had a new job or a job transfer. Those moving to the Mountain West also cited retirement (28.1 percent), proximity to family (20.8 percent) and lifestyle change (19.4 percent). Idaho had the largest percentage of people moving in in search of a lifestyle change, 25.95 percent. Retirees flocked to New Mexico, with 42.74 percent of those moving in citing retirement as their reason.
